Quarterly Update from the Office of the Governor: December 2020
Philanthropy California has invited Kathleen Kelly Janus, Senior Advisor on Social Innovation to Governor Gavin Newsom, to use our platform to provide an update from the Office of the Governor on California's public-private partnerships.
Dear Philanthropy California Network,
As you know, California is a state known for our perseverance, innovation and leadership. The future happens here first, and it happens because Californians shape it. We are 40 million strong, dreamers and doers, rising to every challenge with creativity and resolve. Under Governor Newsom’s leadership, the State of California has partnered with businesses, nonprofits and foundations to address problems decades in the making and new, unprecedented threats to our way of life. Together, we have developed innovative approaches to address some of our state’s toughest challenges.
It is in that spirit that I am so excited to share with you our first-ever Social Innovation Impact Report, which outlines these approaches and demonstrates their impact on Californians. The full report is available online here. Some key highlights:
- 27 public-private partnerships totaling $3.9 billion in corporate and philanthropic contributions, leveraging nearly $1.34 billion in public funding
- 13 California state agencies and departments, helped advanced partnership
- 196 corporate and philanthropic partners and 748 community-based organizations engaged
- Behind each of these numbers are countless stories of Californians who have benefitted from these partnerships, which you will find chronicled in the report
Also, in case you missed it, on Tuesday, November 24th, Governor Newsom and I were in conversation with business, philanthropic and community leaders talking about public-private partnerships on our first-ever Social Innovation Symposium, including Bechara Choucair, Chief Health Officer, Kaiser Permanente, Darren Walker, President, Ford Foundation, Laurene Powell Jobs, Founder and President, Emerson Collective, Ruth Porat, CFO Alphabet Inc., Google and Irma Olguin, CEO, Co-founder, Bitwise Industries and Californians who have benefitted from these partnerships.
